Here are 5 ways to ensure your rabbit’s happiness!
1. Spay and/or Neuter Your Rabbit
The first step to ensuring your rabbit’s happiness is to spay or neuter them! Spaying female rabbits (does) greatly reduces the risk of uterine, mammary, and ovarian cancers, allowing them to live a long, happy life. Neutering male rabbits (bucks) decreases aggression and scent marking, leaving them more relaxed and content.
2. Provide Stimulating Toys
Rabbits love to play and there’s a wide range of toys available. From an empty toilet paper roll stuffed with hay, to plastic baby toys such as keys and stacking cups, there are many options to choose from in almost any price range. Untreated apple branches also make great chew toys!
3. Quality Time
Plan to spend at least an hour each day interacting with your rabbit (more is better). Exercise is essential for a happy rabbit. This is also a great opportunity to brush your rabbit and perform an overall health and wellness check.
4. Provide a Healthy Diet
A rabbit’s diet should consist of 80% high quality hay. Timothy or orchard hay should be provided in unlimited amounts. The remainder of the diet should be a limited amount of rabbit-safe fresh vegetables and a limited amount of rabbit pellets. If rabbits are given too many pellets, they will choose those over their hay. For more info on proper rabbit diet, please visit the House Rabbit Society website. Stop by EARS any time we’re open to purchase hay and pellets at a discount!
5. Consider Adding Another Rabbit
Rabbits are social animals by nature and generally do well with a companion. A companion rabbit can decrease depression, loneliness, and boredom. By adopting a friend from a rescue, you’ll be saving two lives instead of one.
